Franklin County couple gets winery permit Thursday, Jul 17, 2008 By John Lyon Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - The state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board voted Wednesday to grant a small farm winery permit to a Franklin County couple who said they plan to make wine in their garage. The board voted 4-1 to overturn ABC Director Michael Langley's denial of a permit to Andrew and Leslee Post. Andrew Post is a member of the family that owns Post Familie Vineyards of Altus. Andrew Post told the board he was still employed as winemaker for Post Familie Vineyards but said he wanted to start a small business with his wife. The Posts, who live on 37 acres on Buelah Land Drive near Ozark, said they would convert their garage into a winery and would install only a few items of equipment. Much of the work would be done by hand, they said. The board received 11 letters from the Posts' neighbors in opposition to their application. Larry Harris, who said he lives about a half-mile from the Posts, said a restrictive covenant forbids the Posts from operating a business in their home. The Posts said the convenant exempts agricultural businesses and argued their business would bring very little additional traffic to the area. Andrew Post said he would not post any signs and said neighbors would not even notice the winery was there. Harris said he was concerned that granting a permit to the Posts would invite other businesses into the neighborhood. "My concern is, you open the gate and floodwaters come out," he said. Board member J.J. Vigneault moved to overturn the director's denial. "I just don't see this as a huge enterprise out there," Vigneault said. |
