No layoffs at Hino during production lull Wednesday, Jul 23, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Employees of Hino Motors Manufacturing's parts plant in Marion will work fewer hours but will not be laid off while production is slowed as sales of Toyota trucks and SUV's decline, company officials said Tuesday. A subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp., Hino makes axles and suspension components for Toyota Tundra pick-ups and Toyota Sequoia SUVs, two vehicles the automaker has said it would suspend production of for three months, beginning Aug 8. Hino employees will perform plant maintenance and receive training during the slowdown and work 24 hours, or three days, per week. Workers will receive full health insurance benefits during the reduced production period and also will be eligible for unemployment benefits, officials said. In the meantime, the company said it will seek new business from Toyota for the Marion facility. Company officials would not discuss details of those efforts. Hino, Mid-South Community College in West Memphis and the state, including Gov. Mike Beebe's Rapid Response Task Force and the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, will work together to provide skill and technical training to employees during hours they work, officials said. |
