Dumas native gets Senate committee approval Wednesday, Jul 30, 2008 Stephens Washington Bureau WASHINGTON - The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend Dumas native Alan Eastham as ambassador to the Republic of the Congo. Eastham's nomination advances to the full Senate for approval. Eastham, 56, was nominated by President Bush in June. He is currently ambassador to Malawi. The Republic of the Congo has 3.8 million people and is Africa's fifth-largest oil producer. If confirmed, Eastham will oversee the opening of a new embassy next year. Presidential elections in the Congo are also scheduled in 2009. A foreign service officer for more than three decades, Eastham has been assigned to Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Zaire and Pakistan. Eastham is a graduate of Hendrix College in Conway. His wife, Carolyn, is a Morrilton native. |
