Lottery campaign received $75,000 in July Tuesday, Aug 5, 2008 Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Lt. Gov. Bill Halter's campaign for a state-run lottery to fund college scholarships raised $75,000 in July, including a $50,000 contribution from financier Warren Stephens and $25,000 from a Little Rock couple whose total contributions to the campaign have now reached $425,000. The Hope for Arkansas campaign reported the contributions from Stephens and John and Patricia Bailey in a filing Monday with the state Ethics Commission. "I think every child in Arkansas ought to have an opportunity to attend college," said Stephens, chairman, president and CEO of Stephens Inc. "This initiative, if successful, will give a lot of young people a chance." Stephens and his family own Stephens Media, which owns the Arkansas News Bureau. Hope for Arkansas has reported total contributions to date of $552,917 and total expenditures of $485,115, leaving it with $67,802.51 on hand. The secretary of state's office last month certified Halter's proposed constitutional amendment to appear on the November general election ballot. |
