Arkansas to share in disaster rebuilding funds
Thursday, Aug 28, 2008

Stephens Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Most Arkansas counties are eligible to share in $13.8 million for disaster funds being made available through the federal Economic Development Administration, officials confirmed Wednesday.

The money will be distributed in parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma that were declared federal disaster areas due to storms and flooding during the first six months of the year, according to an EDA spokesman.

Grants will help repair public infrastructure not covered by other disaster aid programs. In Arkansas, 62 counties were declared disaster areas in the aftermath of storms and tornadoes that crossed the state and killed at least 20 people.

Congress set aside $100 million for disaster recovery nationwide in an emergency supplemental spending bill that passed in June.

The Arkansas funding was announced by the state's congressional delegation.
