Glover survives stroke

LITTLE ROCK - While state Sen. Bobby Glover lay in a Little Rock hospital Tuesday recovering from a stroke he suffered last week, the longtime legislator's focus was on getting back on his feet in time for the 2009 legislative session, his last as a lawmaker.

Glover, 72, has been hospitalized since Aug. 25, after he was stricken at his home in Carlisle. Family members first took him to a nursing facility next door. He was later transported by ambulance to Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock, then transferred to Baptist Health in Little Rock.

In an interview Tuesday, Glover said the stroke caused pain and loss of feeling in his shoulder, right arm and right leg.

"They're predicting five to six months to get me back on my feet," Glover said. "I hope I can be on my feet in January to help out in the legislative session. "It will be my last session in the Senate."

Glover is a Democrat with close ties to Gov. Mike Beebe and former President Clinton.

"I talked to him within the last couple days from the hospital bed and he was upbeat," Beebe said Tuesday, "but obviously we're worried about him ... and we're looking forward to his return."

Glover has served in the Legislature for nearly 24 years, including three stints in the House from 1973-81, 1983-1991 and 1999-2001. He was first elected to the Senate in 2002.

Glover represents Senate District 28 in Lonoke County. He is chairman of the Legislative Facilities Committee and the Legislative Joint Auditing-State Agencies Committee. He is vice chairman Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee and the executive committee of the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee.
