Hillary Clinton to campaign for Obama in Little Rock Thursday, Oct 2, 2008 By John Lyon Arkansas News Bureau LITTLE ROCK - Former Arkansas first lady Hillary Clinton will campaign for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama in Little Rock on Oct. 10, state Democratic Party Chairman David Pryor said Wednesday. "We're very, very pleased that she's coming. She's going to stir up a lot of interest here in the campaign," Pryor said. Gov. Mike Beebe, Pryor and other elected officials and Democratic leaders are expected to join Clinton for a get-out-the-vote rally, state party spokesman Darinda Sharp said. The time and location have not been determined, but the rally likely will be about 5 p.m. near the Capitol, she said. Former President Clinton has said he plans to campaign in Arkansas for Obama. Pryor said no event with Bill Clinton has been scheduled yet, but "we hope to get him." Karen Ray, executive director of the state Republican Party, said Wednesday the New York senator would not sway voters away from Republican nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona. "Hillary Clinton's lukewarm support for Barack Obama will not go far in convincing Arkansans to vote for her primary opponent this November," Ray said. "As Sen. Clinton has appropriately explained to voters, 'Sen. McCain has a lifetime of experience,' which he'll use to keep taxes low for Arkansas families and small businesses struggling to make ends meet." Clinton won an overwhelming 70 percent of the vote in Arkansas' Feb. 5 Democratic presidential primary but ended her historic bid for the White House four months later after Obama secured enough delegates to clinch the nomination. As of Wednesday, Obama had no appearances scheduled in Arkansas. He last visited the state in October 2006, appearing at a rally supporting then-gubernatorial candidate Mike Beebe and other Democratic hopefuls. McCain made campaign stops in Little Rock in April and in Rogers in August. |
