LITTLE ROCK — The AT&T banners were hung from the basket trucks with care, all in the hopes that Saint Nicholas would soon be there.
Then he was, by Ford Mustang convertible, as he waved to the Little Rock crowd and assembled television cameras on Tuesday morning at an AT&T rollout of its new Fiber program in Central Arkansas.
In brief remarks to the assembled politicians, local leaders and press, AT&T Arkansas President Ed Drilling, after leading the crowd in a version of the Christmas carol “White Christmas, said, “we’re ready to roll” AT&T Fiber to customers in the region.
The service will be first available to those who live and work in Little Rock, North Little Rock, Bryant and Maumelle. The mayors of all four of those cities were on hand, along with state legislators from the Little Rock metro area.
Drilling said AT&T Fiber has been on the market in Northwest Arkansas for just a few weeks with it and central Arkansas becoming two of the 44 metro areas across the country that have it available.
Its main advantage, Drilling said, is speed.
“It is a 1 gigabit connection,” he said. “That’s 20 time faster than cable connections.”
And sticking with a holiday theme, Drilling said customers could download a Christmas movie in 34 seconds.
Among those who spoke were Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola and state Rep. Warwick Sabin, D-Little Rock, who was there in a dual role as he is also the director of the Innovation Hub in North Little Rock.
The service will be available to both residential and business customers. Both Maumelle Mayor Mike Watson and North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith said they believed it would go to commercial customers in their respective business districts.
