Arkansas announced this morning it had, offiically, hired Nick Holt as its on-campus recruiting coordinator.
It's no real surprise. Holt, was Washington's defensive coordinator before being fired at the end of the 2011 season, has was spotted observing Arkansas' preseason practice when camp began earlier this month. He has been in attendance at most of the team's practices.
Holt has ties to Arkansas coach John L. Smith, working for him at Idaho (1990-94) and Louisville (1998-2000). He also had two stints at Southern California as linebackers coach (2001-03) and defensive coordinator (2006-08). He was Idaho's head coach (2004-05).
Here's what Smith said about Holt joining the football department:
"Nick Holt is a tremendous addition to our program," Smith said. "I've known Nick a long time and he has been part of my staff previously so he knows our expectations. He will be able to come in here and fit well within our staff, and he brings a tremendous amount of football knowledge. He is great interacting with student-athletes and truly wants to put them in a position to succeed. I have no doubt Nick will be successful in this role for us."
There's much more notoriety given to the on-campus recruiting coordinator position considering it was briefly occupied by Jessica Dorrell.
Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino hired Dorrell for the position earlier this spring. Petrino later wrecked his motorcycle with Dorrell on the back as a passenger. It was later revealed Petrino had an affair with Dorrell and hired her over 158 other applicants for the on-campus recruiting coordinator position.
Petrino was fired and Dorrell resigned from her position a little later. It has now been filled by Holt.
