FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas won its Southeastern Conference Tournament opener on Wednesday, beating Ole Miss 2-1 in 10 innings in Hoover, Ala.
The Razorbacks (36-19) won the game on a two-out, bases-loaded wild pitch from Ole Miss reliever Matt Denny. Outfielder Brian Anderson scored the game-winning run from third base, helping No. 3 seed Arkansas win its SEC Tournament opener for the first time since the 2009 season.
Jalen Beeks (6-1) earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief of Barrett Astin, who allowed one run on five hits in eight innings. Outfielder Matt Vinson went 3-for-5 to lead an Arkansas offense that collected 11 hits. Outfielder Tyler Spoon drove in Vinson with an RBI single in the first inning to help Arkansas tie the game 1-1. It stayed that way until Anderson's game-winning run in the 10th.
Arkansas advances to play No. 2 LSU on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
The Tigers (49-8) beat Alabama 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Arkansas-LSU game is scheduled to feature a high-profile matchup between starting pitchers. RHP Ryne Stanek (8-2, 1.54 ERA) is expected to start for the Razorbacks, while RHP Aaron Nola (10-0, 1.99 ERA) will be on the mound for LSU.
No. 6 seed Ole Miss will play an elimination game against No. 7 seed Alabama at 9:30 a.m.
