FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas pitcher Ryne Stanek was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Stanek earned the SEC’s weekly pitching honor after throwing a complete game in Arkansas’ 4-2 win against South Carolina last Saturday. Stanek allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked one in his best start of the 2013 season.
It was the second complete game of his career. Stanek (2-1) also pitched a complete game in an 11-3 win against Charlotte in the 2011 Tempe (Ariz.) Regional.
The junior retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced Saturday to help Arkansas (17-7, 4-2 in SEC) clinch a series victory at South Carolina (18-6, 2-4). The Razorbacks won Sunday’s game 5-3 in 11 innings as well to sweep the Gamecocks.
It was the first time South Carolina had been swept at home since 1999.
Arkansas is back home for a five-game homestand this week. The Razorbacks play Mississippi Valley State in Baum Stadium on Tuesday at 3:05 p.m. and again in LIttle Rock's Dickey Stephens Park on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Arkansas opens a three-game series against Mississippi State on Friday night in Fayetteville.
