Cherokee Nation flu clinics available
Cherokee Nation health services is offering free flu vaccinations for Cherokee Nation citizens and their families, including non-Native family members living in the household. Health officials have dozens of vaccination clinics scheduled in October and November at schools, town halls and health centers throughout the tribe’s 14-county jurisdiction.

Paranormal group set to meet
River Valley Paranormal Research and Investigations will meet from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fort Smith Public Library, 3201 Rogers Ave. Co-founders Adrian and Tina Scalf will share stories of past cases and current ventures.

Teachers change meeting place
The Crawford County Retired Teachers will meet at noon Wednesday at the Crawford County Adult Education Center, 605 Alma Circle Blvd. in Van Buren. This is the new, regular meeting place for the group.
Authors to address historical society
The Fort Smith Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room of Fort Smith Public Library, 3201 Rogers Ave. Billy Higgins, author of "A Stranger and a Sojourner: Peter Caulder, Free Black Frontiersman in Antebellum Arkansas," will speak about Peter Caulder and his contributions to the U.S. Military during the War of 1812.
Elizabeth Hill, author of "Faithful to Our Tasks: Arkansas' Women and the Great War," will speak about her book during the next meeting, at 6 p.m. Nov. 8.
Rose Society to host rose show
The Fort Smith Rose Society's Fall Rose Show will be held from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 15 at the Fort Smith Public Library, 3201 Rogers Ave. The show will feature 43 categories of roses plus a separate category for arrangements. All roses entered in the show will be sold at the conclusion. Proceeds will go to benefit the Rose Society.
Entries for the rose show will be accepted from 5-9:30 a.m. Saturday. There will be a prep area available. Judging will begin at 10 a.m. Visit http://fsrs.scdrose.org for complete rules and regulations.
Celebrate Parker's birthday
The Fort Smith Museum of History will celebrate the birthday of Judge Isaac C. Parker from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 320 Rogers Ave. Staff will hold programs at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Birthday cake will be served in the soda fountain, and Floyd and Sue Robison will portray Judge and Mrs. Isaac C. Parker. Parker was born Oct. 15, 1838, in Barnesville, Ohio. He served as federal judge for the western district of Arkansas from 1875-96.

Tribe accepting Angel Project names
The Cherokee Nation is accepting applications for its 2017 Angel Project and Elder Angel Tree programs Monday through Oct. 31. The Angel Project provides holiday gifts to Cherokee children 16 and younger who live within the tribe's 14-county jurisdiction. The Elder Angel Tree program is open to senior tribe citizens who are 60 or older and their spouses.
Applications can be completed online or at several in-person dates and locations around the region this month, including from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Civic Center, 115 E. Choctaw Ave. in Sallisaw.
