Area residents who are interested in running for office or helping others do so can learn more on the subject on Saturday.

The Sebastian County Democratic Party will host a candidate recruitment training and support workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The seminar, which will be an overview of what to expect for a campaign, will take place in the Community Room at the Fort Smith Public Library at 3201 Rogers Ave.

Debi Council, chairman of the Sebastian County Democratic Party, said the party is trying to recruit candidates to fill positions for races in the 2018 election. It is also trying to bring in community members who want to help with supportive roles for campaigns, whether it be directly for a candidate's campaign or for the party.

Council said Denise Garner, who is part of the organization Emerge Arkansas, will be present at the workshop. Garner is also running for the Arkansas House of Representatives District 84 seat, and will be talking about making the decision to run for office.

Another person who will be at the workshop is Ezra Smith, who is a law student at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He has been very active in past campaigns.

"He's going to help with the targets of where to be in your campaign, and what goals that you need to reach within your campaign ... like money spent and on what items and how far along you should be on your money raising and everything at what point in the campaign," Council said. "And then Janet Renwick is one of our committee members and she's going to be going over all of the areas and, like, the (justice of the peace) races that we still need people to run in, as well as the ... state representative or state senate seats that are still open that we need someone to file to run in."

Council said other subjects will be discussed at the workshop, including options for printing materials.

The last part of the workshop will be a question-and-answer session featuring many current and former elected officials. Those who are expected to be there include current Sebastian County JPs Linda Willsey Murry, Dickie Lee Robertson and Rhonda Royal, as well as former Sebastian County Sheriff Gary Grimes.

"(This workshop is important) because I've had a lot of people that we've approached about running as a candidate, and they've come back with a lot of questions of, 'Well, I don't know what to do,' or 'I'm interested, but where do I go from here,'" Council said. "And so this should lay all that out for them, and have them maybe able to make that decision of, 'Okay, I feel more prepared and I'm ready to jump into this.'"

Those interested in attending the workshop can sign up via the Democratic Party of Sebastian County Facebook page, Council said. They can also RSVP to Admission is free and lunch will be provided.
