PINE BLUFF — Police were trying to determine Monday whether weekend incidents at a downtown club in which a Jefferson County Quorum Court member was shot and a man later died were related, a police department spokesman said.

Police said Justice of the Peace Lloyd Franklin II, 34, was shot in the face early Sunday outside the old Greyhound Bus Station. Police were called just before 2 a.m. Two witnesses told police they had broken up a fight inside the building and pushed the individuals involved outside the door.

One of the witnesses told police that after a few minutes, he heard 25 to 30 gunshots, then noticed Franklin running toward him with blood running down his face. He was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center by a private vehicle and later was transferred to a Little Rock hospital for treatment. No information on his condition was available Monday.

The club also was the location of an earlier altercation involving Antonio Jenkins, 23, who was taken home by family members and found unresponsive on a couch at a house Sunday morning. Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office for autopsy.
