LITTLE ROCK — State law enforcement agencies collected nearly six tons of unwanted and expired medications during a national collection of unwanted and expired drugs, officials said Monday.
The 11,942 pounds of medications — about 16.6 million pills — were collected during the Oct. 29 Arkansas Take Back event, eclipsed the 4,500 pound of medications collected April 30.
In the past 14 months, about 12 tons of unwanted and expired drugs have been collected in three separate Take Back events in Arkansas. The events have coincided with national Take Back events.
“Along with monitoring and securing prescription medications, proper disposal is a very important part of keeping from them ever doing harm to everyone,” state Drug Director Fran Flener said Monday in a release.
