LITTLE ROCK — A $31,000 grant from the ConAgra Foundation will fund a new food pantry and workers at the ConAgra Foods plant in Russellville chose to locate the facility at Hector Elementary School.
The Arkansas Food Pantry, which received the grant, announced the opening of the school-based food pantry Thursday.
Factory workers not only selected the Arkansas Food Pantry as the winner of the grant, but the workers also selected the site of the pantry, said Ray White, spokesman for the Arkansas Food Pantry.
The facility will not only supply food to children who receive free and reduced-priced meals at school, but also their families, White said.
"This is a relatively new way to reach out to the families of school kids who are on the free and reduced priced lunches," White said
"It’s better to feed the whole family than it is an individual kid," he said."This is a new approach we are using to try and expand our work."
The nonprofit Arkansas Food Pantry provides food to about 23,000 Arkansans a week, White said.
He said the organization won a statewide competition for the ConAgra funding.
