FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas coach John L. Smith said he might not have been clear enough at SEC Media Days, when he said any player not in the 2012 media guide would not be with the team in 2012.

So Smith repeated his message when asked again Thursday before the 2012 Razorback Golf Scramble at Paradise Valley Country Club.

"If you see his name in the press guide he would have a chance," Smith said. "If you don’t see it there, then you won’t see him there."

It was further proof Arkansas will be without receivers Marquel Wade and Maudrecus Humphrey, tight end Andrew Peterson, and linebacker Tyler Gilbert won't be with the team when preseason practice begins next Thursday. All four players were arrested and charged with felonies in the offseason.

Smith was asked if there was any possibility the four could be welcomed back and said it won't happen this season. However, he didn't rule out the future.

"There’s always the possibility down the road," Smith said. "But I would not expect any of those guys to be here."

It was one of several topics covered during a press conference with Arkansas' coaches before they hit the golf course (which is now being pelted by rain). Here are some other things we learned today:

• QB Brandon Mitchell will spend time at WR in preseason practice. And offensive coordinator Paul Petrino is confident he will help out there. So how did it come about? Petrino said Mitchell and Tyler Wilson came to him with the idea. "They kind of got together with each other and felt like Brandon is a great athlete," Petrino said. "He’s a leader and it’s going to help us get another leader on the field."

• Arkansas has every newcomer on campus except for LB Vin Ascolese. Smith said Ascolese is still trying to get through the NCAA Clearinghouse. It's not yet known if he'll be able to join the Razorbacks this season.

• Arkansas is not actively recruiting any players who want to leave Penn State after the NCAA hammered the program with sanctions earlier this week. Smith said it was a "sad situation" and that the victims include "the players that are there." He didn't rule out Arkansas taking a look at anyone if they receive a phone call from an interested player, but "we’re not going to fly out and go visit anybody at this point.”

• We know RB Knile Davis will get contact this preseason. But how much? Smith said Arkansas is working to formulate its contact plan for Davis as he returns from last August's broken ankle. "Idon’t know if he’s going to get just as much as the other running backs," Smith said of Davis. "We’ll sit down as a staff and decide when we have the scrimmage days and how much contact that he is going to get. And how many reps he is going to get."

Also got some info from Paul Petrino about Arkansas' wide receiver situation without Wade and Humphrey. I'll have much more on what he expects in tomorrow's newspapers.
