FORT SMITH - A man who died in a fatal collision on Interstate 40 in Crawford County on Monday has been identified by Arkansas State Police.
According to a preliminary fatal crash summary on the Arkansas State Police website, the man was identified as Fort Smith resident Matthew C. Choate, 24.
An Arkansas State Police news release states Choate died in a collision along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 at the eight-mile marker near the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department Weight Station in Alma on Monday. Arkansas State Trooper First Class Roy Moomey, 41, of Van Buren, was injured in the crash, having been dispatched to the area in response to information ASP received at about 3:35 a.m. Monday of a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes of traffic.
Choate, driving in the wrong direction, struck Moomey at 3:38 a.m., the release states.
Moomey, a six year ASP veteran, is in serious, but stable condition, according to the report. The incident is under investigation.
