LITTLE ROCK - An inmate of the Arkansas Department of Correction’s Grimes Unit near Newport was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday and later pronounced dead at an area hospital, the agency said Wednesday.

Grady Demery, 32, was found unresponsive at 5:30 a.m. and pronounced dead at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, agency spokesman Solomon Graves said. Demery was alone when he became unresponsive, Graves said.

The Arkansas State Police is investigating Demery’s death.

Demery was serving a 10-year sentence on a conviction of theft of property from Lonoke County Circuit Court.
