LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Surgeon General Greg Bledsoe and his family went ahead with a planned trip to Disney World as Hurricane Matthew advanced on Florida, according to a story that appeared in USA Today.

The story, written by the (Fort Myers, Fla.) News-Press and published on USA Today’s website Saturday, quotes Bledsoe as saying the family considered canceling the trip because of the hurricane but decided to go after planning it for six months.

Bledsoe, his wife, Sara, and their three daughters flew in on Wednesday and were able to visit the Magic Kingdom and Epcot before the parks closed at 5 p.m. Thursday. Disney parks were closed Friday, so the family spent the day watching movies and playing games.

The parks were set to open an hour earlier than usual on Saturday, according to the story, which quoted Greg Bledsoe as saying the family would fly back to Arkansas on Sunday and that “I’ve got to get back and get some work done.”

Bledsoe posted a link to the story on Twitter on Sunday, commenting, “In a weird twist, my family & I were featured in an article in @USATODAY about riding our #HurricaneMatthew at @WaltDisneyWorld. Crazy.”
