It was three days filled with not only golf on the DeSoto, Cortez and Granada courses, but players basked in the sunshine and relished the warm breezes as rain didn’t spoil play as it has in the past few years. Weather was absolutely perfect for all three rounds.
The field was full with 120 players coming from all parts of the U.S. primarily Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, but two traveled in from California.
Play was 2-person scramble. Teams were pre-flighted based on a team handicap. The tournament waived the 14-club rule and GPS range finders meeting USGA specifications could be used.
There were optional skins games Thursday and Friday with day money being awarded Saturday for low score in each flight not winning an overall prize.
Flight numbers 1 to 6 had accompanying titles of Tennis, Pickleball, Bocce Ball, Boating, Fishing, and Trails named after the many HSV sporting activities. Each flight winning couple was awarded $300, second place couple, $200, and third place garnered $100.
Tennis flight winners were Eddie and Danelle Holt of Plano, Texas. Pickleball flight winners were Rick and Jeanne Ford of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Bocce Ball flight was won by Joe Bob and Darlene Garners coming from Georgetown, Texas. Flights 4 through 6 were won by Robert and Diana Gats, Irving, Texas; Bill and Bonnie Beauchamp, Georgetown, Texas; and Ted and Linda Borek, Irving, Texas, respectively.
Each morning a breakfast buffet was offered before a shotgun start. Lunch was served on the course for two days and final day, late lunch was enjoyed in the cool comfort of Granada Grill.
Evenings offered remarkable cuisine, entertainment, dancing and games. The DeSoto Club served a luau buffet first night that included whole hog, huli huli chicken, tropical salads, coconut curried rice, sweet corn, grilled vegetables and pineapple upside-down cake. Players were treated Friday night, again at DeSoto, with surf and turf, house salad, mixed veggies, roasted potatoes and cheesecake.
Players expressed their thanks to the HSV golf department, course staff and grounds keepers for excellent planning, execution and course conditions for the tournament.
