LITTLE ROCK — Middleweight boxing champion Jermain Taylor was arrested Monday after a man told Little Rock police Taylor fired a gun at him.

According to a police report, Thelton Smith, 41, of Little Rock told police that Taylor, 36, of Little Rock pointed a gun at him and his wife and three children and shot at him. The incident allegedly occurred in the 1700 block of Wright Avenue just before Smith contacted police at 2:14 p.m.

Police stopped Taylor in the area and took him into custody without incident. Taylor told the officers he had a gun in his back pocket. The officers also found a small baggy of marijuana in Taylor’s front pocket, according to the report.

Officers took Taylor to the downtown police station for questioning by detectives. Officers later took Taylor to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, after he complained of pain in his ribs from a previous injury.

Taylor was evaluated at the hospital and later booked into the Pulaski County jail on suspicion of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a minor in the third degree and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He was still in custody as of 7:30 p.m. Monday.

In a separate case, Taylor faces charges of first-degree battery and aggravated assault in an Aug. 26 shooting that wounded his cousin, Tyrone Hinton of Jacksonville. That case is scheduled to go to trial June 23 in Pulaski County Circuit Court.
