FAYETTEVILLE - Now comes the real test.

No. 22 Arkansas laid waste to an overmatched and under-manned Mississippi Valley State team and concluded the teams’ two-game series Wednesday, 20-0. It came a day after a 21-4 whipping at Baum Stadium.

The series was never meant to be prep-work for the Razorbacks’ SEC season, instead an opportunity for coach Dave Van Horn to see things in his lineup and his bullpen for the future. Come this weekend, though, Arkansas faces the best three teams so far in No. 25 Rice, No. 9 Houston and No. 23 Texas Tech in the city of Houston.

As for Wednesday, it was much the same as the day before.

Arkansas (5-0) scored 20 runs on 15 hits and 10 walks. Carson Shaddy hit two home runs and Michael Bernal hit another. Those two, Clark Eagan, Tucker Pennell and Cody Scroggins each had two hits. Jake Arledge had three and scored a game-high four runs. Eagan doubled on a 2 for 4 day and drove in five.

Van Horn played his season-opening starting lineup Tuesday but started several reserves Wednesday. Outfielders Arledge, Jack Benninghoff, Damien Simms, Austin Catron at first base, and Scroggins at second were among them. Alex Gosser, normally a catcher, made his season debut at designated hitter. He had been nursing injury. Every player in the lineup reached base at least once.

Freshman left-hander Weston Rogers started on the mound, throwing two innings, giving up a hit and recording four strikeouts. He was relieved by three pitchers who also made their season debuts in Josh Alberius, Ty Harris and Jake Reindl. Those three combined to give up just three hits, no walks and strike out five in their five innings. Cannon Chadwick and Doug Willey pitched the final two hitless innings.

Through five games the only two players on the Arkansas roster who have not played are left-handed pitcher Michael Brawner and right-hander Kevin Kopps, both freshmen.
